My First Experience at a Doll Show

What I Learned About the Fashion Doll Community

There are moments in life where you step into a completely unfamiliar space and realize how much there is still to learn. That was exactly how I felt attending my very first doll show.

My first experience at a doll show was both positive and eye-opening. I met so many amazing and supportive people. Watching and listening to doll creators, doll collectors, and artists made me realize how passionate the fashion doll community truly is.

I come from a very green background in the doll industry. Growing up, fashion dolls were never a major passion of mine. I loved Cabbage Patch Kids and My Little Pony, but I never imagined that one day I would develop my own collectible dolls and create my own cultural doll brand.

Yet somehow, life brought me here.

Finding Support in the Doll Community

Before attending my first doll show, I often felt alone and unsure of where I fit within the doll industry. I have limited experience with social media, networking outside of my family and career, and building a brand in the world of artisan dolls and collectable dolls.

However, that began to change at the doll show.

I met people who genuinely went out of their way to support me. One person introduced me to members of the doll community, another shared my brand with her circle of friends, and another took the time to provide advice on how to improve my table setup and strengthen my brand presence.

These women reminded me that I am not alone in this journey.

As a mother working to bring authentic cultural representation into the fashion doll industry, their kindness and encouragement meant more than I can fully express. It reminded me that there are many talented women who have paved the way for independent creators and multicultural dolls that celebrate heritage and storytelling.

The support, encouragement, and knowledge I gained from this experience felt truly invaluable.

Learning About Different Perspectives on AI & Creativity

Another thing that surprised me was how deeply people feel about AI and its impact on creativity, brands, and the doll community.

I quickly realized this can be a very sensitive topic with many different perspectives. Some creators feel strongly that AI can negatively impact authenticity, artistry, and the value of handmade dolls and heritage dolls. Others view AI simply as another tool that can support creativity and small business owners.

Listening to these conversations opened my eyes to how passionate people are about protecting artistic integrity and originality within the world of collectible dolls and fashion dolls.

More than anything, the discussions made me realize how much I am still learning — not only about the doll industry itself, but also about where I personally fit within this evolving creative space.

Growing Through the Challenges of Building a Brand

As I spoke with more vendors throughout the expo, I realized just how much experience and knowledge many creators have. At times, I felt like a kindergartener entering college.

But despite those feelings, I also realized something important: I truly enjoyed bringing this dream and Nkauj Ntsuab to life.

I loved taking an idea and transforming it into reality.

What I am struggling with now is learning how to market my brand and share it with a larger audience. As a one-person brand, I have to navigate both the parts I enjoy and the parts that challenge me.

Some days feel exciting and inspiring. Other days feel overwhelming and uncertain.

But I continue to push forward because I genuinely believe in my vision, my story, and the importance of cultural dolls that help preserve heritage and representation through art and storytelling.

I hope one day I can look back on this journey and say:

“Wow… what an amazing adventure this has been.”
